Biography

I am a Metis woman and I am currently residing in  ᐊᒥᐢᑿᒌᐚᐢᑲᐦᐃᑲᐣ (Amiskwacîwâskahikan) colonially known as Treaty 6 Territory, which is my place of birth. My paternal grandfather was from the Fort Vermillion Metis Settlement and my paternal grandmother was Dane-za from Beaver First Nation. My maternal family are settlers from the Ukraine. I received my diploma through Grant MacEwan University in 2007, and I have been a Registered Social Worker with the license to perform psychosocial intervention through the Alberta College of Social Workers since 2009. I began my social work career working in child welfare system before moving to field of healthcare in both mental health and addictions, as well as complex case management. I completed my BSW through Thompson Rivers University in 2022. I am currently a second year MSW student in the Clinical Social Work with Individuals and Families Thesis stream through the University of Calgary. In 2022 I began my research journey, specifically with Indigenous Research Methodologies when I completed a 420-hour practicum on the IHNR-Indigenous Health Nursing Research team of BC. I was also awarded a UREAP research project grant, where I completed an exploratory pilot study that looked at the working relationship between Indigenous doulas and social workers. In 2023 I was awarded a SSHRC Indigenous Scholars Award for my Master’s Thesis. This research aims to explore how social workers can help positively impacted Indigenous women throughout their perinatal journey. I am extremely passionate about the well-being of First Nations, Inuit, and Metis children and their families, and eradicating Indigenous specific racism. I have worked as a Research Associate on multiple projects and teams, and I look forward to evolving as a Metis scholar.
