Biography
Catey Boyle, PhD, is a historian who writes on slavery, race/gender, and empire at the crossroads of the African continent and the Middle East. Their writing has been featured in Feminist Formations and The Journal of Modern African Studies, and is forthcoming in Ìrìnkèrindò: A Journal of African Migration and The Review of the Tunisian Academy Beït al-Hikma. They are currently at work on a book project entitled She Who Knows: Sudanic Slavery, Race Formation, and Embodied Dissent in Ottoman Tunisia, 1735-1869. Prior to joining the University of Calgary, Catey was a Mellon postdoctoral fellow at Middlebury College where they led public humanities initiatives focused on migration justice. Their research has been supported by the American Institute of Maghrib Studies (AIMS), the Weatherhead Center for International Affairs, the Mellon Foundation, Dar Ben Gacem - Tunis, and the Harvard Center for Middle Eastern Studies - Tunis.
At the University of Calgary, Catey is thrilled to be teaching HTST 372: Ways of Knowing (Histories of Science, Medicine, and Technology), as well as global history, historical methods, and courses on the history of the modern Middle East and North Africa.
