In her role as Scientific Director for Transdisciplinary Scholarship, Carolyn oversees research, innovation, collaboration, and scholarship activities to advance transdisciplinary research and scholarship at UCalgary. She is a physiotherapist and epidemiologist with a research program focused on injury prevention in youth sport and recreation, concussion, and rehabilitation. She holds a Canada Research Chair (Tier 1) in Concussions, is Chair of the Sport Injury Prevention Research Centre (1 of 11 International Olympic Committee Research Centres in Injury and Illness Prevention in Sport), and Co-Leads the Integrated Concussion Research Program at the University of Calgary. Central to Carolyn’s research program is injury and concussion prevention in the developing youth athlete. Her research program includes a focus on female/woman/girl athlete safety, Para sport, equity deserving youth sport communities, and rehabilitation aimed to reduce the public health burden of musculoskeletal injuries and concussions and their consequences. Carolyn has led large research teams including the Alberta Program in Youth Sport Injury Prevention, Canadian Team in Pediatric Sport-related Concussion Safe 2 Play, Surveillance in High School and Community Sport to Reduce Injuries and their Consequences (SHRed Injuries), and the National Football League Play Smart Play Safe pan-Canadian Program (SHRed Concussions), all large multisite longitudinal cohort and experimental studies in adolescent school and community sport.  She also leads training and career committees across national and international research networks (Canadian Concussion Network, Canadian Traumatic Brain Injury Research Consortium, and IOC Research Centres Network).

Carolyn has published over 370 peer-reviewed papers and recently co-led the IOC Female, women and girl Athlete Injury pRevention (FAIR) Consensus (>100 global collaborators) and led the Concussion Prevention component as an expert group member for the 6th International Consensus for Concussion in Sport. Her research program influences best practice and policy through evidence-informed sustainable solutions that have significant public health impact in reducing the risk of adolescent sport injury and concussion and their consequences. Carolyn aims to keep youth participating in the sports they love.
