Biography

Ayah Metwali is a Teaching and Learning Technical Specialist in the Schulich School of Engineering. She supports instruction in ENDG 233 (Programming for Engineers) and ENGG 212 (Fluid Mechanics for Engineers) through the design of Schulich Studio labs, active learning worksheets, and hands-on student support sessions. She also facilitates the laboratory components of ENGG 212, helping students engage with a wide range of fundamental fluid mechanics concepts.

Previously, Ayah taught ENGG 200 (Introduction to Engineering Design) as a Sessional Instructor for two years, guiding first-year engineering students through collaborative design thinking and problem-solving. Her teaching excellence has been recognized by the University of Calgary Students’ Union, receiving the 2024 SU Teaching Excellence Award for ENGG 200. She was also nominated for the award in both ENDG 233 (Fall 2024) and ENGG 212 (Winter 2025).

Ayah’s current academic pursuits focus on the intersection of artificial intelligence and higher education. She is preparing to begin her MSc in AI and Assessment in Higher Education: Generation and Evaluation, with a research agenda that includes:

  • How Large Language Models (LLMs) can improve the creation of assessments, enhancing professor efficiency and question quality.
  • How Machine Learning (ML) can support fairer evaluation of student preparedness, addressing issues of admissions fairness and grade inflation.

Ayah is passionate about fostering inclusive, hands-on learning environments that combine technical depth with creative exploration, empowering students to build both their engineering identities and professional skills.
