Background

Biography

Ashley Smith, PT, PhD combines his academic research pursuits with ongoing clinical consultation responsibilities. He is also the Co-PI for the development of clinical care pathways for people injured in motor vehicle collisions.  Ashley has appointments with the Department of Clinical Neurosciences at the University of Calgary and McMaster University School of Rehabilitation Science.  With over 60 peer-reviewed publications and book chapters, primarily investigating pain mechanisms, whiplash-associated disorders and orthobiologics, Ashley’s research investigates whether the clinical manifestations of WAD can be modulated, through conservative therapy, interventional therapy or novel treatment methods, such as non-invasive brain, vagal or vestibular nerve stimulation.  He is also a member of the Cochrane Musculoskeletal group, investigating the role of Botox and spinal injections in people with chronic neck and low back pain.  Ashley is also a board member of the Pain Society of Alberta, helping co-ordinate educational activities for clinicians interested in pain education in Alberta.  His clinical responsibilities revolve around co-ordinating evidence-based inter- and multi-disciplinary care of people with chronic musculoskeletal pain.
