Investigating acute kidney injury phenotypes in critical illness syndromes.
Acute kidney injury (AKI) is being increasingly recognized as a heterogenous syndrome with various etiologies and presentations in patients with critical illness. The current clinical definitions for AKI are limited and controversial, making it difficult to diagnose, treat and prognosticate patients as well as ICU survivors. AKI is a common manifestation in critical illness disease states including acute respiratory distress syndrome (ARDS) and sepsis and is associated with worse prognosis. By defining the mechanisms involved in the development of AKI we hope to uncover novel biomarkers and pathways to better phenotype AKI syndromes in hopes of identifying molecular targets for precision therapeutics.
