Projects

Research Projects

My research focuses on two distinct, but complementary projects.  In one project, I am working with Dr. Eric E. Smith to investigate the association between brain blood flow and cognitive function in patients with cerebral amyloid angiopathy (CAA), mild cognitive impairment (MCI) and Alzheimer’s disease (i.e., patients at risk for, or with, dementia). This work is funded by postdoctoral fellowships from the Alzheimer Society of Canada, Canadian Consortium on Neurodegeneration and Aging (CCNA), and Campus Alberta Neuroscience.

The second project, for which I received a Canadian Institutes of Health Research (CIHR) postdoctoral fellowship, is a collaboration between Dr. Smith and Dr. Patrick J. Hanly, (a sleep medicine physician, Medical Director of the Sleep Centre at the Foothills Medical Centre investigating the relationship between OSA and cognitive impairment.

Biography

I am an integrative physiologist, working with Drs Eric E. Smith and Patrick J Hanly. My work with Dr. Smith investigates cerebral blood flow regulation in patients with cerebral amyloid angiopathy (CAA), mild cognitive impairment (MCI) and Alzheimer’s disease.  In collaboration with Dr. Smith, my work with Dr. Hanly uses data from the Canadian Sleep and Circadian Network (CSCN) Adult Obstructive Sleep Apnea (OSA) Database to investigate the relationship between OSA and cognitive impairment. I have a BSc in Human Kinetics (University of Ottawa), an MSc in Kinesiology (Simon Fraser University) where my thesis investigated how human breathing responses are altered following adaptation to a hot environment and a PhD (University of Calgary) where my dissertation investigated the impact of intermittent hypoxia on cerebrovascular and cardiorespiratory regulation in healthy humans and patients with obstructive sleep apnea.  My postdoctoral research has been funded by the Hotchkiss Brain Institute, Alzheimer Society of Canada, Campus Alberta Neuroscience and Canadian Institutes of Health Research (CIHR).
