Biography
Alice Kennedy was raised in rural Ontario and traces her research interests to a childhood spent exploring forests and waterways in the Great Lakes basin. Initially intending to pursue a legal career, Alice completed an honours degree in Jurisprudence from the University of Oxford in 2021.
Following this degree, Alice lived and worked in rural communities across Canada and Central and South America, learning about the diverse and intimate connections between humans and more-than-humans. During this time, Alice’s research perspectives were shaped by the varied ecological relationships demonstrated by these communities. With climate change and ecological disaster looming large, she sought to understand how individuals and groups resist and support systems that result in the destruction of forms of life they value, depend upon, and hold sacred. After working as a tree-planter in northern BC and Alberta in 2024, Alice decided to focus her work on the complexities and contradictions of this industry, in the hopes of offering increased understanding of complex human/more-than-human entanglements and opportunities for cross-species collaboration.
Research
Areas of Research
My research focuses on woman/tree relationships in the Canadian commercial tree planting industry through a post-humanist, ecofeminist lens. I aim to work collaboratively with the more-than-human, forming inter-species kinship networks and co-creating strategies for resistance and resilience in the face of global ecocide.
