Mood disorders, such as Major Depressive Disorder and Bipolar Disorder are common and debilitating. We study these using several approaches and at multiple levels. We use animal models of stress to better understand the neurobiological changes that accompany major risk factors for the development of these conditions. This is done in conjunction with genetically encoded sensors and actuators in order to image and manipulate neuronal function to better understand network changes as a result of stress. Secondly, we conduct clinical studies in depressed patients that are aimed at using non-invasive neurostimulation techniques both as an investigative tool as well as a therapeutic intervention.
